Project-based, environment-focused, and tuition free: The Greenspire School

The Greenspire School offers a unique educational program for middle school students based on purposeful connections between individuals, communities and the environment. Founded on the belief of community and global responsibility to each other and the earth, The Greenspire School (TGS) is a public charter school authorized by Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). Located on the Grand Traverse Commons, TGS incorporates Montessori philosophy and method, place-based education in collaboration with many community partners, hands-on learning indoors and out, and small, multi-age classes.

The Greenspire School's vision for students is to be immersed in learning through functional understanding and application of sciences in relation to ecosystems; through development of mathematics in relation to simple machines and projects; and through understanding the role of humans as stewards of the environment through the study of history and civilizations and their corresponding literatures, economic systems, environmental impact and technologies. Service learning and social/emotional development are integral to a Greenspire School education.

It is the intent of The Greenspire School to actively engage students in discovering personal meaning in their work, and gain a sense of purpose and love of learning that will inspire and direct their best effort within the classroom and beyond.
